June jumps in with a bout of excitement for school kids for it is time to return to the classrooms. It’s ‘back to school’ time.

Getting back to school requires a lot of preparation from both parents and children. Textbooks and notebooks have to purchased, wrapped or covered with brown sheets or bound and labeled. Uniforms must be stitched and tried on.

Pens, pencils, geometry boxes, school bags, lunch boxes, water bottles, shoes. The list of things to buy is endless. All these spell excitement for children.

On the other hand, there is apprehension too. Who is the new class teacher? Who is my bench mate? How will the next class be? Are the portions going to be tough? The questions running in the children’s mind is again endless.

So, getting “back to school’ is serious business with a lot of planning and preparation.

Back to School Preparation Steps

Children have many challenges to face when they return to school after the holidays. It is time to shift from the summer vacation mode into school mode. They need help from parents and teachers in getting back to school. Extend a helping hand to help your child get back to school by implementing the following steps.

  1. Help your child overcome school fear

From a tender age, many children are reluctant to get back to school after having fun during the holidays. They dislike the mundane routine of classes and hate the strict discipline of schools. It is no wonder that children whine, cry and complain of “false illnesses” to avoid getting back to school.

Parents must highlight the brighter side if school. They should point out to children the benefits of attending the school like being with friends, playing games as a group, learning new things, etc.

With proper guidance and counseling, children can be easily made to overcome the fear of going back to school.

  1. Instill confidence in your child

Worries about the class teacher, classmates, study portions, class monitor etc besiege the child’s mind. It is the duty of parents and teachers to instill confidence in the child by extolling the virtues of schooling. Talk of the good times they had at school, the moments of pride when the teachers praised them, how enjoyable their class is, etc to motivate the child. Reassure the child that he/she can really do well in the upcoming class and that teachers will be supportive of them.

  1. Discuss ways to improve performance and combat stress

Have an open and friendly discussion with your child on his experience at school the previous year. Find out if he/she faced any problems and try to identify the causes of those issues. Discuss with your child the ways to improve his/her performance in the coming year. Always encourage the child to open up and express his feelings and thoughts. Such a frank discussion will help to nurture the child better.

  1. Plan the academic year with your child

Taking your child into confidence, plan the upcoming academic year with your child. Set realistic goals and objectives for your child with his/ her mutual consent. Monthly goals and targets can be fixed for not only academics but other extracurricular activities and personality development as well. Ask the child what kind of support he/she needs to help him/her accomplish these tasks and provide them. This kind of planning will help in developing the personality of the child.

Important things to bear in mind while sending your child back to school

  1. Ensure that your child has enough sleep the previous night so they can be fresh and bright to school.
  2. Give the child a hearty breakfast so that he can concentrate on his studies better, but don’t overload the child and make them doze in class.
  3. Ensure that the child is neatly dressed for school.
  4. Check his timetable and bag to see if all the books are packed.
  5. Make sure all holiday assignments have been completed.
  6. Send the child on a cheerful note with tasty snacks and a promise of good times at school.

Getting back to school can be fun if it is planned and executed properly along with your child. All it requires is some practice to make their grand return and the ‘back to school’ time perfect.
