A New Year ushers in hope for a new beginning and a fresh start. Most people make New Year resolutions to mend their ways, learn new things and improve themselves.

Both parents and children need to look back at the past year’s experiences and decide what changes have to be made to work towards a better future. This involves cooperation and participation from both parents and children to transform the resolutions to reality.

Top 10 Resolutions for 2019

Here are a total of 10 resolutions for both parents and children to accomplish in 2019.

Top Five 2019 Resolutions for Parents

The adults are up first. Here are 5 goals for parents to strive for this New Year.

1. Eating Together

This is a big one. Nowadays, the dining table is just an idle piece of furniture. Parents must make it the family hangout spot by eating together with their children at least once a day. Both parents and children must have at least breakfast or dinner together in order to bond within the family. Mobiles, laptops, TV, and other electronics should be avoided.

These family moments must be spent in happiness with healthy conversation and food as supplements. Don’t start any arguments, quarrels and controversies, so avoid talking about religion or politics. Even busy working parents or top executives must realize the importance of the saying “a family which eats together, stays together”. Put eating together on top of the agenda for 2019.

2. Reduce Gadget Time

Parents often chide their children for always using their mobiles or playing online games, but they themselves keep chatting on Whatsapp or Facebook! This is rather ironic and hypocritical. Using electronics gadgets non-stop is a bad example for your children.

Parents must lead by example and spend time at home doing quality work without electronics, like reading the newspaper, cleaning, gardening etc. Gadget time must be restricted in the morning and late evenings for all at home in this New Year 2019.

3. Family Meetings

Parents often treat children as babies and do not involve them even in any family -related matters. In fact, most of the decisions about the children like the coaching classes they attend, the hobbies they want to pursue, subjects to take, etc are often taken by parents themselves.

This New Year, in 2019, parents must have family meetings to discuss key issues. Take time to talk to the child and involve children in these meetings. Take their opinions into account before finalizing the decision. This gives the children a feeling of responsibility as well as an opportunity to express their views.

4. Reduce and Recycle

In this New Year, parents and children can take this productive decision of reducing and recycling waste. The government has already banned plastic bags in some Indian states. Saying ” no” to plastic bags and organic recycling should be made part of the family agenda for 2019.

5. Spend Quality Time With Children

These days, parents are spending a lesser amount of time with their children. The time they do spend with their children is often used for reviewing their performance, giving long lectures on the importance of discipline or good marks, or finding fault with their behavior.

This New Year 2019, parents must make a change to stop this blame game and start spending more quality time with children. Play games or sports with children, help them with their homework, talk about their day, and discuss their problems. All these can yield fruitful results for both sides without toxicity.

Speaking of children…

Top Five 2019 Resolutions for Children

Now, on to the top 5 goals for children to achieve for this New Year.

1. Learn Something New

Children can take the initiative in 2019, of learning something new, such as a new hobby, art, craft, language etc. This will help them to refresh their mind and alleviate academic stress.

Children don’t have to learn something new every day, but expanding knowledge beyond just what school teaches is important. Parents must cooperate and allow children to pursue their interests in 2019.

2. Avoid Junk Food

Staying healthy must be the top priority for children in 2019. Students tend to become overweight when they live a sedentary lifestyle. This means just sitting around at home watching TV or their mobile while stuffing themselves with chips, sweets, snacks, soda, etc.

Fat and oil should be kept to a minimum this year. Children must take an oath to avoid junk food and eat only homemade healthy food. Exercising daily must also become the prime focus for children in 2019.

3. Finish Tasks on Time

It’s time to say “no” to procrastination as tomorrow never comes. Stop putting of tasks and delaying them. No more excuses. Children must make a commitment in 2019 to finish tasks on time, whether it is for the home, the school, tuition, whatever.

It’s easy to postpone tasks but it has to be done eventually, so why not now? Get it over with. Get motivated, get up off the sofa, and just do it! Besides, punctuality and discipline will help in the long run to achieve better goals.

4. Help Parents

Just as parents should take time to help their children, the inverse also applies. Children must understand that their parents care for them most. They must learn to obey them and also help them in their daily chores. Stop with the petty arguments, bickering, and infighting in 2019.

Helping parents makes children understand their responsibilities and burdens. Above all, children learn to respect parents more when they help them. A good parent-child relationship is critical, so make it a top priority this New Year.

5. Study Harder and Smarter

Children must resolve focus on their academics. They must identify their weaknesses and work harder to correct them. It’s not just about working hard, but smart as well. The best students are those who imbibe the most amount of knowledge and information in the least amount of time. Rather than just memorizing and regurgitating facts, students should study to learn new things for this New Year.

They can make use of online practice learning forums to clarify their doubts, write sample tests and work out problems.

Sites such as LetsPractise can also come in handy.

We have a lot of practise papers and test sheets to help facilitate learning. LetsPractise serves students from multiple Boards for first standard all the way through the tenth standard. New Year Resolutions are made easily and forgotten quickly too. Make this time different. In 2019, both parents and children must set their own goals and resolve to adhere to them strictly. Mutual monitoring can instill a better sense of commitment among parents and children to follow their New Year resolutions meticulously.

Climate change is an issue that is a growing threat to mankind and it is our little ones who pay the biggest price. Come to terms with the fact that climate change is very real. Due to the lack of importance given to a child’s health, we would see a generation of people with poor health conditions because of the negligence they face today.

Children are physically, mentally, and emotionally dependent on us adults to fend for them. We are required to be well-informed and well-equipped in handling and providing care and guidance to our children when it comes to climate change. In order to do so, a bit of education on the topic of discussion is necessary.

Some of the most common issues we deal with in our daily lives are pollution, low-quality fluids, and adulteration in the food supply. It is always wise to be aware of the problem before we jump into finding a cure.

6 Tips to Keep Children Healthy During Climate Changes

Here are six tips on how and where we should start in order to keep the children healthy and safe.

1. Immediate Attention to Common Illness

Despite it being a slight temperate or an attack of the common cold, the condition needs to be addressed professionally. It has become a common phenomenon to self-diagnose with the assistance of the freehanded information that is available online. We are handling a child’s life here and a wrong diagnosis can lead to severe, damaging consequences to the child. Therefore, professional assistance is required despite the lack of severity of the issue. Always seek the advice of a Doctor.

2. Limited Exposure to the Sun

In times of heat waves and high temperatures, it is always important to watch a child’s exposure to the sun as the consequences are almost immediate. It is necessary for the child to receive the required dosage of vitamin D but excess exposure due to the hazardous UV rays is harmful to our children. Limited exposure to the sun from sunrise until 9 AM is safe and a little bit of child-friendly sunscreen lotion and protective clothing should do the trick as well.

3. Fluids Free of Contamination

Our drinking water may be free of discolouration and odour, but is it really as free of contamination as we think? Our only consolation is that our RO water filters are doing a good job. But sit back and ask yourself when was the last time you had it serviced and cleaned. Therefore, making sure the child has access to clean water is of high importance. Keep all drinkware clean and free of bacterial contamination.

4. Hygienic Environment

Keeping a safe and hygienic environment is a must in the presence of children. With the increase in lack of a healthy immune system, these children are at a constant threat to illness. Clearing of stagnant water, access to a clean sanitary system and basic sanitary provisions such as clean water and napkins are necessary.

5. Healthy Diet

When children experience climate changes they are prone to illness due to a weak immune system, therefore, a healthy diet should be a constant part of the child’s life. Handling situations temporarily might bring relief and would disappear as fast as the relief brought but if your main concern here is to bring up a healthy and independent child then a well-planned and healthy diet should become his/her lifestyle.

6. Providing Basic Education to Children

Although adults are constantly monitoring children it is essential that they are educated on how they ought to take care of themselves in the absence of an adult or a lack of full supervision. Constant reminders of basic self-hygiene such as keeping one’s hands clean, nails free form dirt, clean clothing, etc., should be given. These constant reminders over a period of time become a habit thus, leading the child to safe and hygienic adulthood. A bit of education on damage control and post-trauma after natural calamities in limited dosages give children the ability to cope and rebuild after situations.

Although humans have played a major role in causing the chaotic climate condition, we still need to survive these attacks despite the cause. On realizing its effects and making a conscious effort working around these changes will be of great benefit to the children as well as the caregivers. Since the climate at the moment is unpredictable, stay warm, eat healthily and stay safe.

To understand climate change, children must understand science, history, math and more. LetsPractise can help you achieve this goal. We have question banks, mock tests, practice papers, and tons of informational sheets related to many subjects. Keep your child educated as knowledge is power. Pillow fights and fighting for rights; sharing stuff or playing rough- these are things you have to contend with if you have siblings. For kids who have siblings, the grass is always greener on the other side. They long to be the apple of their parent’s eyes and bask in their undivided attention. But little do they realize that having siblings is much better than being an only child.

Research proves that an only child is much more selfish and spoilt compared to the others with siblings. A study by the Southwest University of Chongqing in China further reveals that “only children” may be better at creativity but always scored lower on “agreeable personality traits” than children with siblings. In fact, medical scans revealed that the “only children” have less grey matter in the median prefrontal cortex which is the part of the brain which deals with thinking about one’s relationships with others. This is why “only children” tend to think more selfishly and are more demanding in attention than those with siblings.

If you are not convinced, here are more reasons why having siblings is better than being an only child.

Reasons why having siblings is better than being an only child.

Having siblings is always better because they are

  • Someone to talk to

Your sibling is a great companion to talk to and hang out with. You can always discuss, debate, argue and brainstorm ideas and topics. You will never be bored when you have a sibling around. There is so much to share and chat when a brother or sister is around.

  • Someone to share your secrets with

After a certain age, children find it difficult to discuss their personal problems with parents. For such children, siblings are a boon. Sibling is someone with whom you can share your secrets with. Even the darkest of secrets can be revealed in confidence to your brother or sister. This is because your brother or sister is a person of your age who can relate to you and your problems. They also know you from childhood and are familiar with your strengths and shortcomings. This is why you can always use a sibling as a “sounding board” to express your feelings and share your secrets.

Your sibling is your alter-ego- the most intimate and trusted friend for life.

  • Someone to lean on

In times of trouble, your sibling is the first person whom you can lean on. They are the silent staff of support who can help carry your burden. You do not have to think twice about asking for help and you can be assured that they will be there for you- any time, any day.

  • Someone to guard you, and guide you

Everyone needs a friend, philosopher, and guide and the best you can get is a sibling. Siblings always speak their mind and warn you against any risks and dangers. They will also guide you on the right path to choose as they have your best interests at heart.

A sibling is your guardian angel in times of distress and your godfather to guide you throughout your life.

  • Someone to giggle, gossip and gallivant and play with

Siblings are such fun. You can speak your mind freely without inhibitions to them. You can gossip and giggle unabashedly. You can also bravely gallivant the whole town with them. Yes, siblings are your best friends and companions for life.

All the special moments of your life will probably be with your siblings. Siblings are a part of your tears, fears, smiles, wails, laughter, grins and guffaws. They are the people who support you every step of the way -in both good and bad. Siblings are not only a part of your growing up, they are a part of your entire life. They can play games both indoor and outdoors – resulting in laughter and bonding. They are great companions during family vacations who want to do and explore all the things that you want to.

It is always better to have siblings than to be an only child for they are someone to share and care in your life’s thoroughfare.

Every morning, the moment we wake up, the first thing we do, even before brushing our teeth, reaches for our mobile phones. Every person in the household, young or old is armed with a smartphone and so engrossed in it that it takes an effort to disengage them.

Children are no exception to this and are in fact the easiest preys as they simply imitate elders. Gone are the days of routine, discipline, and exercise. Now, these are the days of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram!

So what should we do? Dump all technology as trash?

Obviously not. Using technology in moderation and in the right way is the key to improving our life. Raising children in a world of technology is a challenge as Technology is a double-edged sword which we cannot do away with or do without. Here are 10 important tips for raising children in a world of technology.

  1. Encouraging the use of technology in the right way

We are in a world of incessant technological innovations. Every minute, technology is getting upgraded and outdated. If our kids don’t catch up, they will feel left behind in this rat race. To survive in this world, children should have the latest know-how of tech trends.

Encourage children to learn the use of the right kind of tech devices which are essential for their life. Children should be familiar with the use of email, internet, operation of home security systems etc. In the case of an emergency, technology can be a powerful weapon to have on hand.

  1. Using technology in moderation and by example

Forget cigarettes and alcohol. Smartphones are what a majority of children are addicted to nowadays.

Children should be made to understand that technology is a bane if used in excess. Explain to them the health and lifestyle issues that a child may face by using technology 24×7 like sleeplessness, obesity, poor academics etc. Emphasize the importance of exercise, sports, academics and family time.

Lead by example and strictly practise what you preach. Do not sit up with your laptop or phone until late hours. Be the example for your child to emulate in using technology. Otherwise, their excuse will be “you do it, so why can’t I?”

Staring at computer, TV, and mobile screens for too long is unhealthy and often times the children get sucked into a fantasy world that isn’t real. Beware of this and use the net with caution.

  1. Use age restrictions for using social media

Social media channels like Facebook and Instagram earmark 13 years as the minimum age to use them. Others like Reddit, Tumblr, and Discord have content not suitable for children of all ages. Enforce the same at home. Strictly prohibit the use of social media below 15 and insist on total honesty and transparency in their usage. Do not entertain the use of social media through false accounts.

There are umpteen social sites out there such as Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, Pinterest, etc. Not all of them restrict content to filter it accordingly. It is up to you as the parent to analyze what your child is watching and take the appropriate actions.

  1. Have schedules and control over what your child does

Clearly, mark the hours of technology usage. For instance, allot a single hour of 5 – 6 PM every day for TV for the child. If there are two kids, insist on sharing or taking turns. Install parental control in your TV and limit the programmes children can watch. Insist on you having access to their emails and social media accounts so that you can watch their cyber footprints.

Prohibit children from taking phones to school. Insist on knowing their passwords and frequently use their phones to check on their social media presence. The internet is not all sunshine and rainbows, so you need to block access to certain sites for a good reason. You can read our post on Keeping Your Child Safe Online for more.

  1. Highlight the demerit of technology as a distraction

Continuous surfing on the internet, talking on the phone, or Whatsapp chats will only cause delay to the school or office, leave homework or office work unfinished and diminish your self-repute. Explain to children that technology can be a major distraction and hence must be restricted.

Children use it so much to the point where grades and real life friendships suffer. This is unacceptable and needs to be stopped.

  1. Life does not run on likes or shares

Children these days are desperate for Facebook or Instagram likes. It is an unhealthy and sometimes dangerous obsession.

Counsel them saying that flattery and praise are fickle and the true realization should be from within. Getting depressed over poor social media following has become a trend for teenagers today.

You are not your Facebook likes or Twitter followers. You are you, and social media should not define you. Teach your kids the same and ask them to like themselves for what they are and not for what others see in them.

  1. All that is on the internet is not true

Children often do research on the internet for their school projects. Teach them to differentiate credible information from false. There are lies, falsehoods, and half-truths.

Teach your children that just because they read something on the internet, it doesn’t make it true. There is a lot of fake news floating around on Facebook, WhatsApp, and the like. It is important to be cautious and perform research instead of  just sharing everything you see.

Most of the content is opinionated and only some are backed by statistics. Teach children to look out for credible information from scholars like whitepapers and use them.

  1. Technology cannot replace personal relations

A smartphone can help you converse for hours but it cannot become your family.  Teach kids the value of family ties and relations and the importance of personal relations.

The online world may seem like a fun and exciting place where you can be anything. However, no matter what, real life is real life. Kids tend to use the online realm as an escape from real life problems. Sit down and talk to your child. Have

  1. Make technology the problem solver

Encourage kids to use technology to seek and solve problems in academics and in daily lives. Ask them to question what purpose technology serves each time they use it. This will help them be the right judge in using them.

You can find answers to almost everything on Google. All you need to do is look.

  1. Use technology for education

Sure, you can find games and fun content on the web. The internet is also an ocean of information if you use it rightly. It has videos and tutorials on building robots, coding, innovation, and basically anything else you can think of.

Apart from gaming or entertainment sites, your children can use sites to learn new stuff. Just search for it on Google and you will probably find the answer. Even YouTube has a lot of instructional and informative videos.

There are also websites such as Let’s Practise that are really resourceful in helping kids with their academics through practiced learning. We offer practice sheets and mock exam papers as well.
